Week 6 in Room 10

This week we have seen heaps of  play based learning and evidence of the children using the key Competencies of Relating to Others and Thinking. It has been especially good to watch children building on prior learning. e.g. remembering from our pirate ship floating and sinking work in Term 2 that  cardboard did not float after a few hours but plastic did. This thinking was behind a cardbaord box boat being wrapped in bubble wrap to make it float. Tesing of the boat will take place later this week.

Ask your child what they were getting up to with these colourful chickens in No Child Left Inside this week.
We have spotted lots of self initiated reading and writing going on this week, so great to this enthusiasm coming out during play based learning sessions.

Christmas was in the air on Thursday when a very modern version of Santa's sleigh visited school along with some of the actors from the Kiwi Christmas movie.
It was lovely to see some of our Room 10 friends enjoying the School Community Group disco on Friday evening. Thanks for supporting this fundraiser.

Start of Term 4

We have had a very exciting start to Term 4 with learning based around Diwali as well as our main inquiry focus on Fairy Tales. Below is a collection of moments from some of this learning experiences.

We welcomed in the new term by celebrating the Hindu festival of Diwali. This included making our own rangoli patterns, learning about traditional Indian clothes, including a sari, making divas from both paper and salt dough and having a special visit from Room 9 friends who told us lots of interesting facts about Diwali.

All of Kowhai are sharing in an inquiry topic on Fairy Tales this term. We started off thinking about Jack and the Beanstalk.

Lots of rich oral language was used to describe the changes we saw in out beanstalks. We shared these ideas using doughnut discussion circles.
Take a look at some other creations inspired by this story.

In maths we have been learning about equal sharing using halves and quarters.

The warm weather this term has seen us outside developing soccer, high jump and shot put skills.

Finally, as everyone knows, for many of us it was the first time we had been in the Nelson Masked Parade. Well done to all our brave little penguins , we were so proud of you all.

End of Term 3

Kia ora  and welcome to a new term.

We thought the children might like a quick look at some of the things we got up to in the last week of Term 3.
With the weather deciding to stay dry for a few days we were able to take our play based learning outside. Learning to make a giant bubble was a great way to 'keep trying'. Well done brilliant bubble makers!

It was also Dan's last week of his teaching placement with us. We have learnt so much about Samoan culture from him sharing with us and teaching us the Sasa dance. Come along to Room 10 and check out the Samoan art we did with him.

Another favourite that he taught us was Te Tinana, the Maori version of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.
We will all miss him not being in Room 10  this term but hope he comes back to see us for the Masked Parade later this month.
This term we will be continuing to develop our P.E. skills in No Child Left Inside.

.......and a few other photos that made me smile.
Finally a big thank you to everyone who sent in healthy food for our end of term shared kai and I am sure we will enjoy another one together before the end of the school year.
Don't forget to pop in take a look at the fish collages on display in the class foyer.
